A Plug For A Good Thing

One of the most important things in my life right now is the non-profit community FM radio station I volunteer at. Please take a moment and browse our schedule- you will almost certainly find a show featuring your favorite genre(s). We stream most of our shows live on-line, some of our local broadcast NPR content we must block on-line for licensing reasons . But there's a huge variety of stuff.
Every once in a while you might even hear me! Each and every show is hosted by a living, human DJ who is wholly responsible for playing whatever music they want- the shows are all hosted by DJ's who love the music they play and are very knowledgable about what they air. You won't get that from Robo-Radio.

I mainly do studio engineering , the occasional live sound for events, and a monthly show of obscure 198o's music, but there's plenty more dedicated folks who do all the really important stuff - and we are all volunteer and operate wholly on donations and very cheap underwriting announcements- so no ads for you to listen to! Lots of great music and shows and duct tape, but it's hard to hear the duct tape.

The station is now 16 months old. It was literally cobbled together with discarded and refurbished broadcast gear. Our sound studio is largely comprised of my old gear that I wasn't using. My "control room" is a converted pantry/atrium.
Our first broadcast tower looked suspiciously like it was a least partially constructed of old painting scaffolds.

But we made it happen. Our community has rallied around us and we've done better than anyone dreamed. And it was only a dream for a long time... but that story is too long for blog...
Suffice it to say that from nothing we created something good, and that good thing is growing.
In fact we now have a new transmitter and a new tower is on the way. A new DJ board has just arrived. I will soon have a new mixing console for the sound room.
Yeah!
A ragtag bunch of misfits pitched in , each filling a niche or adapting as needed. We made it happen and it's getting better every time I go there. It's an amazing group of people and I'm very proud to be part of it. Please give us a listen. Thanks!

Oh hey- did I mention I was given Volunteer of the year award? I was happy surprised!

The world runs on volunteers the same way a truck runs on asphalt - but we keep plugging away...
Thanks!
