Sunday Drive

My good looks are wasted on radio. My record collection is not. First a show, then a road trip.

Osibisa- Y Sharp
These guys had Roger Dean album covers. Groovy percussive funk.

Stranglers- Paradise
Lost and found.

Christy Moore- Don't Forget Your Shovel
"Don't forget yer shovel if ya wanta go to work"

--------------------------------------------------------------
I don't have a shovel- no wonder I can't find a job.
I do have a car that runs...I finally made it home to visit my grandmother, who is under hospice care at the moment. Here is my car parked at her house this morning.

Fairport Convention- The Way I Feel
A Gordon Lightfoot song...timeless.

Damien Dempsey- I Believe in a Thing Called Love
Remember the X-Files and the poster Fox Mulder had in his office? I want to believe.

Clanaad- Coinleach Ghlas an Fhomhair
I can't pronounce this. I listened to the lyrics and thought I had it, but nooooo....embarrassing.

Pogues & Steve Earle- Token Celtic Drinking Song
It is. Good stuff.

Isaac Hayes- Don't Let Go
Isaac Hayes was the voice of South Park's Chef before he was murdered by Scientologists. Those songs Chef sings on SP? Those aren't parodies-that is what Isaac really sounds like.

Damien Rice & Christy Moore- Lonely Soldier
Painful anti-war song.

Marianne Faithfull- The Soldier's Wife
No matter where you come from, war can kill you.

Isaac Hayes- Shaft (edit)
I am in a wah-wah mood.

Nouvelle Vague- In a Manner of Speaking
Wow. What a nice song.

-----------------------------------------------
When I arrived, my grandmother was engaged in some high-powered business negotiations . I had to wait while she finished her conversation with the Appalachian Mafia. Somebody is sleeping with the squirrels tonight!

Rickie Lee Jones- Girl From Ipanema
Ah...RLJ...

Isaac Hayes- Truck Turner
Man, again with the double-time wah wah...I wonder if this tune has anything to do with Ike and Tina? I think it's about a woman with an ass so fine that it turns trucks around. Really.
I told you those South Park songs aren't satire- that's the real Chef!

Jefferson Airplane- Milk Train
Grace Slick doesn't want to stop your milk train from coming- she just wants to ride it all of the time. That's a weird thing to write a song about...this has some great fiddle by Papa John Creach.

BeBop Deluxe- No Train To Heaven
From the man who brought you Blazing Apostles.
------------------------------------------------------
Finally- the open road! The leaves are still largely green- usually they have changed colors by now. By the way, I do not recommend taking photographs while driving.

Mister Sensitive- Laurie Says
Featuring me on guitar, slide guitar, vocals and keyboard; Greg Harrup on bass and Jimmy Kallis on drums. We got a review in the local paper following an exceptional gig, circa 1996:
" Mister Sensitive is destined to take a place in Richmond's rock pantheon. "
We broke up before the ink was dry.

Kinks- Money-go-round
One day I will play two hours of Kinks- that would barely scratch the tip of Ray Davies iceberg of genius.

Supertramp- Bloody Well Right
This record is very, very well produced. This song brings back some memories...

Jane Siberry- Love is Everything
This cut is labeled (Harmony Mix). I think that means it's 3 minutes longer than it should be.
After six minutes of this, I need something more cheerful.

Marianne Faithfull- Sister Morphine
Yep. This here's a cheerful tune...

Jethro Tull- The Mouse Police Never Sleeps
For Greebo, who probably isn't the mouser he dreams to be.

Loreena McKinnett - Marco Polo
One of my faves.

Eleni Mandell- Madhouse
Another fave. Imagine a female Tom Waits with an art-school punk attitude and a brazen cabaret swagger. That's Eleni.

War- Why Can't We Be Friends
Why?

Damien Dempsey- Celtic Tiger
Because of greed, that's why.

Gong- Cat in Clark's Shoes

My grandmother now has a cat. The cat has no name. Any ideas?

Name for the cat?

Hmmm... Based on the snapshot of it sitting on the stairs, I'm gonna suggest, "Tripping Hazard!"

Hmmm...mysterious phone calls and a cat with no name? Forget the name, write a novel! ;)

Damn! You were jonesing for some Isaac Hayes weren't you. Maybe you should name the cat that.

Your Grandmother is adorable!

Personally, I love the name Fido for a cat. Particularly a female cat. Or, how about Mr. Sensitive? Loving the picture of Grandma. She looks fun.

Call the cat Kilroy...or More Cowbell. Every cat needs more cowbell. I got a fever...maybe you haven't seen that skit.

I want to check out that Steve Earle/Pogue song. I know ass was kicked when that one was cut.

Angel- I've suspected she's had a cat for some time, but never had the photos to prove it...like the Loch Ness monster.

JS- You have the coolest daughter.

CD- Ha! We do think alike...granny can't use the stairs, so it's safe.

TG- I am trying to do that. It's a graphic novel without the graphics - a comic farce with a tragic ending and a serious message.

Whim- I have my reasons. Every single song is an 'in-joke' that (usually) only I get...when I tell people that my show is a two-hour tribute to myself and my record collection,I'm not kidding!

Rube- You have excellent taste.

MC-Fido! Ha! I like that. I have already claimed Mr. Sensitive for myself- that's my old stage name- I even copyrighted my songs under it.My Granma was in a good mood that day! Yay!

Give yer Gran a hug for me..she's cute and I miss both of mine..they were my Angels of unconditional love.

You are THE Muzikmeister and I salute you. I appreciate that you share the countless hours and years spent deciphering and appreciating all of the thousands of songs in yer 'ead! I never read you without a pen and paper to write down these gems.
Seriously.

I like cats to have names that reflect their general ambivalence about us and the world that has imprisoned them. I can totally relate to that love/hate thing.

Pins, Katya, or Haughty if female and Karl Manx, Louis Litterbox, or 'Chat'lemagne if it's a boy.
