This afternoon Cindy Sheehan gave a speech in my front yard.
There was a peace rally at Byrd Park, which is only a few blocks from my apartment, so I braved the perfect weather and went to hear her. At first , I thought the event was canceled because I didn't see the gathering on the other side of the artificial lake.
No cars on this side of the lake.
Lots of cars on the other side.
Where is the rally?
Not here.
I hear a bongo drum in the distance. Bomp. Once.
Maybe over there?
Here it is.
The last I heard, Sheehan had 'retired' from marches and rallies, but she's been stirring it up lately. I didn't know that she had been banned from the Daily Kos for threatening to run as an independent against Nancy Pelosi for her seat at the House of Representatives or that she recently moved an appearance in Charlotte because of concern over violence from a pro-war group called "Gathering of Eagles."
On the GoE website one person left this comment in reference to Sheehan: "Eagles have been known to kill rodents". Another comment claims that the "vast silent majority of Americans" support the war.
Really?
I'm sick of war.
How about you?
Peace.
Out.

i like the pics dude- so what all did she say??!?
yeah....what did she have to say for herself?.....curious..
She said : The war is bad, Bush is evil, then she listed some real BushCo offenses ( lie into war, attorney -generals, etc) and somehow lumped bribery into it because "we know they are criminals so they are probably guilty of bribery" - maybe that is true, but it was an unsupported charge and that sort of weak logic gives BushCo supporters easy soundbytes- google her and you will find a LOT of Sheehan slams.
I like her and respect a lot of what she's done- she points out what needs pointing out, but I'm a little leary of the easy use of the N-word and F-word (Nazi/Fascist)that sort of extreme rhetoric ,even when true, tends to shut moderates off -it's hard to find objective material on-line about her- it's a love or hate thing...
I don't especially care for Daily Kos, so getting banned by them is a plus in my book- but retiring and then coming right back is a negative.
Mixed bag...haven't really sorted it all out yet but I wanted to get the pics up.
Hey, nice pics -- what a surprise to find that around the corner! I like your take in the comments. I like a lot of what Cindy has done, but completely agree with your points about turning off the moderates. My mom (who is well right of moderate) and I have had several discussions about Cindy, and there are some STRONG feelings there, sheesh. You're right, we don't need to give them any more ammo over something that's unsubstantiated. There is plenty of evidence for all to see, it's not necessary to add fuel to the fire with that stuff.
Interesting, I'd like to have been there. I have felt the same way about protest marches at the bomb plant in Oak Ridge - I think the more radical elements give too much ammo to the pro-war folks. I'm fairly radicla in my thinking, but you have to be careful how you argue your case.
So, not much of a turn out? We would have gone but were out of town. Fountain Lake is near us too. I remember marching on City Hall in town during Gulf War I, it felt like very few people were at that one. I tried to justify that maybe since this is a small city and that maybe it was a decent turn out but...
Maybe they were out of town too eh?
It's all very frustrating to think that people don't get off their asses or pulled away from box stores enough to make a difference. If I were a GaBillionaire maybe I would hire Blackwater for a coup. But more likely if I had that kind of money I would be a rich bastard on the "other side" of the fence. We're in a class war, and the middle class with the SUVs and Ryan Homes are too self-interested in their pleasures to care. My soon to be Dad-in-Law, who borders on Socialism, thinks they should reinstate the draft but not to get more soldiers. He thinks it would maybe get people to realize that there is a LOT at stake in this. I feel we need to reinstate some sort of Civilian Conservation Corp (http://www.cccalumni.org/) and MAKE people do some public work projects such as cleaning up rivers, forests, cities. Other countries make young people enlist in some sort of public service, I think we should do the same. There would be no downfall in that and it might make people give a damn more about their country (or environment!) besides what's on sale at Target.
I digress, sorry...
