Tails Out

Pictured above are the  rusty remnants of a bygone era, reels of recording tape containing nearly a decade of wasted musical effort on my part- I mean that I was wasted when I made the effort, not that the effort was wasted. It wasn't.

I don't think that any creative effort is every truly wasted, even if it is witnessed by no one but the creator and lasts no longer than the time they spent conjuring it out of the void. There is joy to be found in the creative process itself, be it wringing unholy howls out of a guitar or writing down ideas that no one, not even yourself, will ever see again.

If that sounds futile, it is because it is futile. Everything worthwhile is.

That doesn't mean that actions don't have real and tangible consequences, good or bad, or that there is no point in trying. Trite-sounding or not, trying is its own reward, we learn from each attempt we make, large or small, profound or mundane; and just because there's no real point  to it doesn't mean there is no real hope to have or reward to be gained, it just means that in some distant but inevitable future there will come a time when the Sun expands and swallows the Earth and nobody knows or cares who Elvis or The Beatles were, so they certainly won't know or care who you  were or what you did- or didn't do because you thought it was hopeless to try.

On a recent business trip, my return train was delayed and when I asked the Amtrak Customer Service attendant how long it would be, he informed me that there had been a "fatality on the track" and the train would be held indefinitely while the coroner and police did their investigation, but he could put me on the next train instead, just a couple hours away. That sounded good to me. I didn't ask about the nature of the fatality, but he told me anyway- it was probably a suicide, and that those had been more and more common lately. The worst one were the ones in cars, he added. I thought about that, thanked him and went to grab some dinner.

As I ate, I silently cursed the inconsiderate jerk who had chosen my train for their suicide. Couldn't they have chosen a less disruptive method to off themselves? Suicide by locomotive doesn't sound especially pleasant and it can't be fun for the people who have to scrape up afterwards either.

After dinner I wanted coffee, so I went to the ubiquitous Sux- and my wallet was gone! My ID, debit card and cash, all gone and me with suddenly no way to get home or get my car out of the parking lot once I got there. I frantically raced back and forth along my path looking, nothing. I asked the sandwich shop if I left it there. Nope, sorry.

My train was leaving soon and I still had my ticket but you need an ID once you get on. I don't know what happens if you don't have ID and I didn't want to find out. I was at a loss as to what to do next when I suddenly heard my name on the PA. I was being paged to the customer service booth by the gentleman I'd spoken to earlier.

The attendant had my wallet, someone had turned it in with my cards and cash intact! I asked him who had done so and he pointed out a homeless-looking man hovering around outside the little service office. I went outside and spoke to the hovering man, thanked him and gave him my cash, figuring it wasn't much and I'd have lost it anyway. And the man's act of decency was priceless.

What would you do if you saw a wallet on the floor of a busy rail station? How would it differ from finding it on a deserted street?

Fancy Strikes Again

I don't recognize that phone number but I know the ring. It's my imaginary friend, Fancy. I don't want to answer it but Fancy has a siren-like quality to her, as compelling and irresistible as an air raid warning.
I pick up the phone and wait for the bombs to fall.

"Hiya! Long time! How ya been? News bad enough for ya?"

"Hi Fancy. Long time, yeah. I've been OK. You never call when I'm happy, so I guess I must be miserable now."

"Are you saying that I make you miserable?", Fancy asks. She sounds hurt.

"Yes." Ouch.

"Fuck yeah! I still got the touch!" Her tone of pain becomes one of triumph. I've been played.

"Look, you didn't call me just to prove that you can drive me nuts," or did she?, I suddenly wondered to myself, "so there must be some point to this call."

"Yeah, it's about the Republicans."

"The Republicans?"

"Yep. Well, them and the Democrats. I don't know what to call them...Powers That Be? The Illuminati? Military-Industrial Vampires? Anyway, the Evil White Men (EWM) who run everything are making their move right now and it's going to work, mark my words."

"I hate agreeing with you but I think I do. Explain."

"See, right now, America's in trouble. It's not in trouble because of the falling markets, it's the fear of the falling market that's the trouble. Fear is driving bad decision making. The same people who caused the mess will get hired to fix it. I can tell you how that's going to pan out: breadlines, soup kitchens, dust bowls, angry grapes..."

"Damn, girl. You sure do cheer me up. Thing that really scares me is that the McPalin ticket is a set-up, that the-EWM- wants them to lose the election- Obama will inherit two unwinnable wars, a looted Treasury and the very real possibility of being the Head of a broken State and the Republicans are throwing 2008 to regroup for 2012. Obama may or may not be a good President, but he'd have to be a great one to get us out of where we are going and I no longer sense any greatness...by 2012, the public will be broken in wallet and spirit, desperate enough to vote for just about anyone- by 2012 Sarah Palin will be an experienced Governor and campaigner. She will run on a platform of faith and values, reprising Bush's 2000 themes, which will work again...we will elect the neo/ theo-con Christian dictatorship that we, as a people, deserve."

"Well, yeah. Even if she blows this debate, she'll have four years to work on the spin...voters won't get any smarter but she will. Rove will still be here, the PNAC hasn't gone away..."

"God Rest your soul, Uncle Sam."

There's a pause as Fancy and I share an imaginary moment of virtual silence for the grandest illusion of all, The American Dream.

"Oh, right", she picks it up," I wanted to give you shit about your dreams."

"My dreams? You mean the one where I'm dating a 21-year old Nina Hagen and we escape from East Germany by joining a musical circus and after we get married, she inexplicably changes her name to Greta Drake and starts smoking crack on stage...that dream was pretty cool until she started getting high and seeing ghosts...it was creepy."

"Um. As your subconcious, I gotta say that there are somethings that I don't really wanna hear, alright? Your Nina Hagen fetish is best kept to yourself."

I make a mental note to do a Nina Hagen post soon.

She continues, "I was thinking a little less dramatic and metaphorically than that. Basically, if you are to dream properly, you need to return your balls to their sockets."

"My what?"

"Your eyeballs. They need to go into the sockets in your face so that you can see where you are going. Right now you have them shoved so far up your ass that all you can see is tomorrow's shit."

"Wow. I thought you were going light on metaphor. That one was pretty icky. But , yeah, I see what you mean. I'll be OK. It'll be worth being happy just so I don't have to listen to you anymore."

"Hhaha", she laughs giddily, hurting my ear,"I am so fucking good at my job. Bye for now!"

On Being Incorrect

(Delay on new PC, must post...still on old beast)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the things that I lost when my PC crashed was the outline and a few sketchy chapters of an aborted book. I was attempting to examine life using the language of sound as a symbol system...my basic premise was that each individual contains a recording studio within themselves and that the skills, equipment and techniques used to record audio all have counterparts in both the real and philosophical worlds- for example:

Click Track: In recording, a 'click track' is essentially a metronome. It is used to keep musicians playing at a consistent tempo. It steadies the musician-an erratic click track will derail them.

In the real world, we have a number of different 'click tracks' and they tend to play at different tempos: family, art, work, love- these are all 'click tracks'. By deciding which tempo gets assigned to which track, we set our priorities in life.

On a philosophical level, a 'click track' could be viewed as passion or faith. For example, I cannot prove that John Bonham used a click track while Led Zeppelin were recording Physical Graffiti, but my passion for sound causes me to take it as faith that he did- in a way ,this parallels an individual's faith in their religion, the believer accepting as faith the unprovable 'fact' that the Divine Click Track is there and on-time.

-------------

That's a very abbreviated, informal version.

After a few chapters of stuff like that, I bogged down and could go no further and eventually I gave up. When my PC died, I wasn't especially upset over losing my roughs, the whole thing had dead-ended.

Until.

I had a breakthrough.
My approach was incorrect on a very basic level.

We are not 'recording studios'. We are sound itself.
We are waves and energy. Electrical, physical energy.
We are, in the jargon of audio, the source.
The world around us is the recording studio and each person is continually recording their own concept album, a process which invariably requires a lifetime to complete.

Here is a quick look at how I look at working with sound :

The idea is to get the source (usually music) to the destination ( usually a set of speakers, in my case it is sometimes a radio transmitter) as quickly and cleanly as possible. To do this, one must understand signal flow, which is the path that the sound takes as it travels from source to destination.
Sometimes there are obstacles, but there are tools available for dealing with problems as they arise- or preventing them altogether( a chapter about EQ, Compression, Gates and Dynamic Processing to follow)
Once you are comfortable with your signal flow, you can experiment with echo, delay and other Time-Based FX. Usually, you won't need them, but it's fun to know how they work anyway.

If a problem persists, trace the source carefully through every stage of it's signal flow. Do not take any component for granted as 'working', test them all. Eventually, you will find the stage where the sound stops or breaks down.
Once it is identified, you address it by applying whatever repair or replacement is needed.
If the broken element adds nothing, remove it entirely and continue without it.

It's my feeling that this basic audio approach can be applied to real-life situations with very effective results.
For example, I've been dealt a huge number of setbacks over the last several months, any one of which would have, in the past, been a trigger for me to drink and self-punish instead of fixing my signal flow.
Fuck. That.

I'm tracing my path and removing the junk that doesn't work.
My PC crash isn't so much a tragic loss as it is a vital step in the cleansing of my signal flow. If I can learn to accept the loss of things that are precious to me, I should, as a result, be able to let go of things that aren't precious (or even healthy) to me.

If something isn't perfect the first time, record it again and again until it sounds right. It's quite a bit of work, but it's worth it.

After all, it's the song of a lifetime.

Rabies on an Upswing

Do possums attack people? I sure as hell hope so.

****************************************************

Animism:
1.the belief that natural objects, natural phenomena, and the universe itself possess souls.
2.the belief that natural objects have souls that may exist apart from their material bodies.
3.the doctrine that the soul is the principle of life and health.
4.belief in spiritual beings or agencies.

Secular:
1.of or pertaining to worldly things or to things that are not regarded as religious, spiritual, or sacred; temporal.
2.not pertaining to or connected with religion.

I have combined these two disparate concepts into a unified whole, a belief system that works for me : Secular Animism.

Dude, you might say, that doesn't make any sense.

It doesn't have to make sense. That's where this comes in handy...

Faith:
  1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
  2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.

I suppose Secular Animism could be defined thusly:

1. the belief that natural objects, natural phenomena, and the universe itself exist.

This, I admit, is a pretty dull foundation for a religion. In fact, when you take animism and strip away all the parts about 'souls' and spirituality, you are essentially left with little more than science, which can be dreadfully academic. Science also requires proof, which tends to preclude faith.
Proof is also hard work, so we will exclude it and leave science to Dr. Moreau, Dr. Doom and their egg-headed ilk.

In lieu of proof, I proffer possum.

The New Breakfast Snob, March 23, 2008:

Claanad
- The Hunter
Is there an award for reverb?

Alvin Lee- The Rapper
Ten Years After twenty years later.

Stranglers- Hallow to Our Men
From 'The Gospel According to the Men in Black'.

Damien Dempsey- Celtic Tiger
Greed. What is it good for?

Pentangle
- Storyteller
Deep Purple- Hush
Savoy Brown- Poor Girl
Neil Young- Motorcycle Mama

Damien Dempsey- Colony
I sing the song of the colony
How many years and you're still not free
And your mother cries and you ask god why
Greed is the knife and the scars run deep
How many races with much reason to weep
And your children cry
And you ask god why

I look to the east, I look to the west
To the north and the south, and I'm not too impressed
Time after time
After crime after crime
They raped, robbed, pillaged, enslaved and murdered
Jesus Christ was their god and they done it in his name
So he could take the blame if it's not all a game
With bible in one hand and a sword in the other
They came to purify my land of my Gaelic Irish mothers
And fathers, and sisters and brothers
With our own ancient customs, laws, music, art
Way of life and culture
Tribal in structure
We had a civilisation
When they were still neanderthal nations
We suffer with the Native American, the Indian in Asia
Aboriginal Australia
The African people with their history so deep
And our children still weep and our lives are still cheap

You took what was not yours
Went against your own bible
You broke your own laws
Just to out do the rival
But did you ever apologize
For the hundreds and millions of lives
You destroyed and terrorised
Or have you never realized
Did you never feel shame
For what was done in your country's name
And find out who's to blame and why they were so inhumane
And still they teach you in your school
About those glorious days of rule
And how it's your destiny to be
Superior to me
But if you've any kind of mind
You'll see that all human kind
Are the children of this earth
And your hate for them will chew you up and spit you out

-Damien Dempsey

Whoa. Then I played a few choice snippets of Patti Smith...you know the ones.

Great Big Sea - End of the World
Well, I played 'Colony' and Patti Smith on Easter and lightning didn't strike me dead...but if it had...

John Prine- Please Don't Bury Me
I'm donating myself to science. Unless my cats eat me first.

Velvet Underground- Lonesome Cowboy Bill
Gentle Giant- As old as You're Young
Emerson, Lake & Palmer- Hoedown
Jethro Tull- Moths
Grace Slick & Paul Kantner- Earth Mother
Fiona Joyce- Cry Over You
Frank Zappa- St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast Medley
Steve Hillage- Wait One Moment
Dude. Collect yourself into the Cosmic Power of the Great Healing Wave or something...Hillage is a fantastic guitarist but he would make a lousy secular animist.

Nouvelle Vouge- In A Manner of Speaking
Brian Eno -Mother Whale Eyeless
Altan- Eoghainin O Ragdain
Mr. Acker Bilk - Easter Parade

Roy Buchanan- I Won't Tell You No More Lies
Dude, that's a double negative. Perhaps that is why this song is an instrumental.

Pretty Things- God Give Me The Strength To Carry On
Amen, y'all.

Have a Happy Day, Holy or otherwise.

Big Picture Playlist

Steeleye Span- Calling Song/Blacksmith
I got off to a great start by introducing this band as "Steely Dan". More coffee!

J.D. Steele Singers- How Shall I See You Through My Tears?
Speaking of Steely Dan, Donald Fagen produced this record. It's Oedipal Gospel.

Peter Tosh- I'm The Toughest
I dedicated this song to myself.

Blue Oyster Cult- Godzilla
"Folly of Man"
is my new favorite phrase - this song points it out again and again.

Damien Dempsey- Marching Season
Hatred is on parade and Damo wants it to stop. Why won't anyone listen?

Bob Marley- Hold On To This Feeling
Years later, this feeling will bury it's fangs in your ankle while you sleep, causing you to wake in the dead of night, clammy with cold sweat. Perhaps I misinterpret this.

Lucinda Williams- I Think I Lost It
OK. This is what I was thinking of. This morning I asked Lucinda if I could be her roadie. I'm still waiting for a reply. I don't think she listens to my show.

Bob Dylan- Idiot Wind
Remember that mixtape I gave you in 1988? This song was the first song on that tape for a reason.

John Cale- Rise, Sam, Rimsky and Korakasov
Synethesia is sorta like seeing sounds as colors or something...some chick is rambling on about some old Russian dudes and I'm letting Bob Dylan play his harmonica solo in the background as the strings on the Cale piece swell in the key of Green. It's pretty trippy, even without drugs.

Can- Spoon
I like the way this looks.

Spoon- Everything Hits at Once
This one goes out to the deer I killed on July 4th. There should be a suicide prevention RoadKill Hotline for wildlife. It would've saved me $1200.

King Crimson- Three of a Perfect Pair
One is the loneliest number. Three is the jealous numeral.

Frank Zappa & Mothers- Concentration Moon
Way back in the Sixties, FZ was singing about the US Government rounding up innocent citizens and placing them in Camps. It's already been done once and the New Camps are being built as we speak:
the Army Corps of Engineers awarded Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root a $385 million contract to construct detention centers somewhere in the United States, to deal with "an emergency influx of immigrants into the US, or to support the rapid development of new programs," KBR said.
New programs?

Marianne Faithful- Brain Drain
Did Barry Raynolds win a medal for his production on Broken English? He should have.

Pretty Things - Blue Serge Blues
Bonus points to Phil May for not dying.

Soft Boys- Muriel's Hoof/Rout of the Clones
Muriel was a deer who lost the will to live. Her hoof went through my headlight. There is enough of her DNA on my car to clone her.

10 CC- Speed Kills
Yes it does. Ask Muriel.

Red Noise- Revolt Into Style
We are a giant blob of rebellious non-conformists with discretionary income.

Chris Spedding - Video Life/Radio Times
Did I mention how much I love the radio? I do, I do. Video...eh. Not so much.

The Who - Naked Eye
The stars are all connected to the brain...

Be Bop Deluxe- Sister Seagull
You're the reason I survive.
.. dedicated to Volvo for making such survivable cars.

Tom Verlaine- A Future In Noise
Fuckin' guitarist getting all philosophical and shit...Reemco School of Numbness...I feel smarter just listening to it.

Belly- Geppetto
Rocks in threes.

Big Brother & Holding Co. - Joseph's Coat
Recorded after Janis Joplin died. Big Brother were an under-rated band, this album (Be a Brother) is actually pretty darn good.

Lou Reed
-Kill Your Sons
Sometimes things seem...intense. But not enough to warrant electro-shock therapy. Before you check yourself in for a 'rest', listen closely to this song.

Snakefinger - 8 1/4
During an LSD-fueled jam session with avant-garde musicians The Residents, all the participants watched in disbelief as Phil Lithman's fingers became elongated , glowing snakes and wrapped themselves around his guitar, giving birth to his adopted moniker. Wikipedia has it slightly wrong- I heard the story from Snake himself. I got the impression he enjoyed telling it.

Nina Hagen- Superboy
Nina escaped from East Berlin back when that meant something.

Stranglers- Sweden (All Quiet on the Eastern Front)
My Teenage Swedish Internet Girlfriend was born in the same month as my 1990 Volvo. This is for Em.

Paul Simon
- Late In The Evening
Dude. It isn't even 9AM yet.

Gary Numan- You Are In My Vision
I can see you in my microphone. It's that synethesia thing.
